Drinking

Drinking
"Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of wine."
Proverbs 23:29-35
COLLEGE REALITY:
Alcohol consumption is pervasive on college campuses. Many of the social activities in college are linked with alcohol. It can be very hard to just say "No" when many of your friends say "Yes".

SESSION GOAL - Developing Discernment About Drinking

It should come as no great flash of insight that the 21 year old drinking age on college campuses is fairly ineffective in stopping student drinking. Big alcohol (particularly beer) companies have a pervasive interest in promoting their products on college campuses (especially through sporting events and fraternities and sororities).

84% of college students drank alcohol last year. College students say that the # 1 social activity involves drinking alcohol and 2 out of 5 college students binge drink weekly (5 or more drinks in a row). Typically, what happens is that college freshmen and sophomores act really stupid with alcohol. By the time they are juniors, if they are indeed still in college, they wise up and drink in moderation. By then, they are 21 and the thrill is gone.

Many of the pathologies on college campuses are intertwined with alcohol abuse. For example, insurance claims against fraternities where Order Nowalcohol was involved:

  • 95% of roof/window falls
  • 94% of fights
  • 93% of sexual abuse (date rape, etc.)
  • 98% of fatalities
College Transition Group teaches college students to appreciate that fun can be had at college without alcohol or to enjoy alcohol in moderation (21 years of age, please!) Be willing to question the pervasive assumption that getting drunk has any redeeming qualities.
